DENMARK: Alcohol sales drop for first time in years |

In Denmark people drank less alcohol in 2009 than the previous year – the first drop for several years. The latest figures for first three quarters of 2009 show a 20% decrease in the quantity of taxable alcohol reported sold across the board. And the average of 11.7 litres of pure alcohol bought per person for the year was 1.5 litres less than five years ago. The Danish Brewers' Association (Bryggeriforeningen) said that beer sales within the industry decreased by 8% last year compared to 2008.
According to Statistics Denmark alcohol consumption had been gradually climbing for many years prior to 2009.
The Danish Brewers' Association (Bryggeriforeningen) was founded in 1899 and englobes all of the major breweries and bottleries in Denmark. Apart from beer and soft drinks, its members sell juice, cider, natural mineral water and other bottled waters.
The Danish Brewers' Association works with policies and issues related to taxes, excise duties, packaging, marketing, competition, environment, food, alcohol policy and working environment.
The brewing and soft drinks industry in Denmark according to Bryggeriforeningen :
- Produces more than 700 million litres of beer in Denmark annually.
- Produces and sells around 500 million litres of soft drinks in Denmark annually.
- Sells more than 7.000 million litres of beer worldwide.
- Employs more than 30.000 persons worldwide.
- Suffers the highest taxes on soft drinks in Europe, and belong to the high-tax EU-countries for beer, and consequently suffers a rapidly growing bordertrade from Germany, that accounted for estimated amounts of 154 mio. litres of beer and 118 million litres of soft drinks in 2003.
- Supplies the danish government with more than DKK 1.400 millions of annual revenue, from taxes on beer, and DKK 750 millions of annual revenue from taxes on soft drinks.
